Internet Scanning

Students, faculty, and staff who need to scan the Internet for research purposes should submit a Policy Exception request to be granted an exception to the Acceptable Use policy.

Please note that the policy exception will certainly not be granted unless the following best practices are met:

  • Where possible denote the purpose of the scan in the reverse DNS entries of the scanning source addresses(s). For web scanning, provide a documentary URL in the requesting User Agent
  • Clearly explain the purpose and scope of the scans in all communications
  • Provide a simple means of opting out and honor requests promptly
  • Conduct scans no larger or more frequent than is necessary for research objectives
  • Spread scan traffic over time or source addresses when feasible
  • Do not scan special/unrouted network ranges (https://github.com/zmap/zmap/blob/master/conf/blacklist.conf)
